Here's a freebie, Wikipedia. But where does it rank?
The look of a site is often the first thing people react to when asked what they think of a site. I thought this site looked really cool... Can you make mine look like that? However, although important, I say it has little to do with the long-term success of a site. I believe the functionality (meeting the user's needs) and solution (solving a problem) are much more important.
The look is the first impression a user has. After that, it is all about use. The look won't keep you coming back. A good solution that is easy to use will.
Can you think of a site that you use all the time yet has no little-to-no visual design? (*cough* Craigslist *cough*)
That's my perspective anyway. In researching this theory, I was looking at the top 25 sites in the United States. Before I give the sites away, though, let's have a little fun and take a quick quiz on the top 10.
How many of thetop 10 sites in the United States can you guess?
Example: "website.com" OR "website.org"
Sites 11-25
Below are sites 11-25. I was originally going to have the quiz on all of these but then figured that is too much to bother with.
11: Go.com
12: Imgur.com
13: Craigslist.org
14: Tumblr.com
15: Pinterest.com
16: Espn.go.com
17: Walmart.com
18: Netflix.com
19: Live.com
20: Bing.com
21: Paypal.com
22: Blogspot.com
23: T.co
24: Instagram.com
25: Cnn.com
Here is how the rankings are calculated by Alexa.com:
The sites in the top sites lists are ordered by their 1 month alexa traffic rank. The 1 month rank is calculated using a combination of average daily visitors and pageviews over the past month. The site with the highest combination of visitors and pageviews is ranked #1.
How many did you get? Any surprises?
